About us & you

People ask me all the time why I call this Maverick.

The meaning of the word powers two of our values: independence and unorthodoxy.

But the truth is I just thought the name was cool. And we, as a student group, aim to bring the university community closer through news and events.

We're also here for experience to complement our degrees. Are you interested in writing, photography, filmmaking, podcasting, design, programming, or anything related? We'd be glad to have you on our team!

Networking opportunities, experience, and bringing the USC community closer are the benefits from producing for The Maverick.

Mandula Barta

Previous Team Leader and PR Coordinator

I joined The Maverick because it is so important for our university, our students to have a platform where they can express their opinions, learn about events happening at uni and celebrate our creative students. Having a space to discuss ideas and events is crucial for our learning, as university is not only about what we learn in classes, but who we become throughout the whole experience. We hope that The Maverick can contribute to the learning and entertainment of our students.

Writer, ideas and support

It is vitally important for the University to have an independent newspaper where students are free to voice their opinions on various subjects. The Maverick offers students that opportunity and encourages interaction from students from all disciplines. I am a third year journalism student who is doing a minor in criminology. My interests include international justice issues and I would like to work in a humanitarian field that combines the skills I have learnt through studying journalism here at USC.

I have and will continue to support The Maverick so that the students of USC can get news from actual students reporting. I am in Public Relations from USC and aiming to work in media and communications in the technology or government sector.

I support the maverick because I like being a part of projects and supporting student run groups. I studied a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Graphic Design, minoring in Creative Writing and Photography. I'm now working for Coast to Coast Media, a realestate magazine, as their Graphic Artist.

The Maverick represents the most important facet of university - the student's side - and here is the opportunity for that view to exist without the filter of teaching staff which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just a different thing.

I started university to do a Bachelor of Creating Writing which I finished June 2017, and I plan to return in 2018 for a Masters of Creative Practice. My intention is a long-term/side career as an author of epic-fantasy and magic-realism novels.
